If your dog has rolled through a muddy trail or wet their coats, they’re bound to bring it home. You can keep them confined to one area before they cause too much damage. We’d choose the kitchen or laundry room because they’re made for easy cleaning.

Everybody has messes to clean up, there’s no escaping it!

Do you ever see those photos in entertainment magazines of Hollywood A-listers spotted grocery shopping or running errands? You know, the ones with the headlines: Celebrities: They’re Just Like Us! Even the pros have messes to clean up. Well, I’m far from being a celebrity! Though, the cleaning business my husband and I started is famous (Kansas City’s Top-Rated Cleaning Service).

But you might be wondering if our house ever gets messy (and boy does it!). You’re definitely not alone if you feel up to your ears in cleaning chores. Laundry, dishes, and dust are just a fact of life. It’s hard to keep your house neat and tidy all the time, especially when there’s work and kids and pets to keep up with too. 

It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Mess happens! Even we have days where we could use some help to clean up a mess, especially the ones we weren’t expecting. That’s why we want to share our Cleaning Chronicles from Casa de Myers

We’re Just Like You!

We may not have the paparazzi to prove it but, we roll up our sleeves to tackle clutter and cleaning chores.  Let me give you a bit of insight into the daily happenings at Casa de Myers…We’re your typical working, community-supporting, pet-loving, kid-filled family. When we’re not running our cleaning business or setting up coaching clinics for the community, we have our own house to tidy. Between sports, toys everywhere, and dogs that shed hair faster than we can vacuum, you can imagine just how messy our home can get. Our family knows how important it is to keep a clean house, we even have a chore chart to keep us all on track. But, just like anyone else, we’ve learned to expect the unexpected.

Hand to heart, what I’m about to share with you really happened…

A few months ago I went away to Charleston for 7 days. When I came home, I discovered my teen girls had adopted THREE baby ducks. I don’t know how much you know about ducks, but they are the MESSIEST animals. Don’t even get me started about coop and poop maintenance! Sure my house was clean (mostly) and the laundry was done, but…THREE NEW DUCKS! Oh, and by the way, mom, the garbage disposal stinks! These girls know how to clean the disposal, but no one could be bothered to take care of it because they were too busy nursing these ducks!

So maybe our scenario isn’t exactly like yours. But you can likely relate that homes have a way of becoming messy – and cleaning can consume all of our time and energy. Kids are kids, pets are pets, and we’re all just trying to do the best we can.

Make Cleaning A Family Affair

My biggest secret to keeping a tidy house is that you do NOT have to do it all on your own. Our kids right down to our youngest granddaughter all have responsibilities for themselves and their belongings. We have systems in place for how everyone can pitch in.

Messes to clean up? Here are a few tips from Casa de Myers:

  • Set up a chore chart. You can rotate chores weekly or monthly, or just give everyone a specific chore based on their age, ability, and skill set. The key is that everyone in the house chips in.
  • Have systems in place so everyone knows the best ways and the best tools to use to get each area or appliance its cleanest.
  • Make sure everything from toys to office supplies to sporting equipment has a specific home. This prevents clutter (and oofs from tripping over stuff!).
Believe it or not, there are ways to keep your house clean without going insane.

Don’t Be Embarrassed to Ask Someone for Help

Okay, so maybe you’ve got all of your systems in place and everyone is working their hardest, but it’s still not enough. It doesn’t have to take ducks to push your cleaning stress over the edge! Or maybe you’ve spread yourself too thin and chores like dusting and vacuuming are starting to fall by the wayside. Maybe you just hate to clean!

We all love the holidays and we all dread the holidays! Why? Because the in-laws are coming and if you’re like me Thanksgiving is at your home.

You are the host, now what?
Time to prep your home. I usually start about 4 weeks out doing deep cleaning on different sections of my home.
 
Must-haves to prep for this cleaning; Dawn dish soap, microfiber towels, mop and mop heads, vacuum, All-Purpose, PH Neutral floor cleaner, bathroom cleaner and a Magic eraser.
 
Holiday-Prep-Checklist

Tips to help you through the process of cleaning for the holidays.

  • Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Do a little every day to make sure you stay on task.
  • Don’t be afraid to get the family involved! as a matter of fact, this is a must. Children as young as 5 years old can help with cleaning. Example: Toy clean up and carrying small baskets of items to designated rooms.
  • Start at least a minimum of 2 weeks ahead.
  • Do one room at a time.
  • If you struggle with trying to get started just start with removing all trash and items that do not belong.
  • Don’t be afraid to bag up donations and drop off or ask for a pick-up. This is a perfect time.
  • Try to do as much cleaning as you can before Thanksgiving so that all you are doing is a light pick-up.
  • Don’t be afraid to get a cleaning service if you just are too overwhelmed to come in a few times over the holidays.
  • Use my checklist to do your clean-up.

Dealing with Covid-19 Cleaning

Some have asked what we are doing to deal with Covid-19 cleaning needs. Here is what we are doing both as a business and a family. Please, please, please know to do your own research on how to proceed. This is only me sharing what we are doing to stay healthy. I am NOT a medical doctor.

1. Enforcing constant hand washing for 20 seconds or longer as per the CDC. Note: make sure you are actively washing your thumbs it is often forgotten because you just wash only your other part of your hands. Studies show most commonly missed parts of hands when washing is thumbs and back of hands. Covid-19 cleaning requires that you pay special attention to all areas of your hands.

2. I am reminding everyone to touch their face as little as possible. No rubbing noses and eyes.

3. Frequent washing of light switches, door knobs, desks, keyboards, kitchen table, your vehicle door handles and common areas especially in offices. ****especially your bathrooms. Beef up the amount of times you clean it. If you normally clean once a week, do covid-19 cleaning 2 times or 3 times a week.

4. Businesses should highly encourage employees to work from home or stay home if they have symptoms.

5. For our cleaners, we are using gloves for bathroom covid-19 cleaning.

6. Avoid high traffic areas when you can. Example: don’t fly if you don’t have to.

7. We are using hand sanitizers. When choosing the right hand sanitizer, make sure you choose the right one. It should have a minimum of 60% alcohol.

8. Use a alcohol based spray to clean….we use one with 91% alcohol base for wipes to clean counters and other high touch areas.

9. Stay home if you are sick.

10. Most of all, we are remaining calm and taking precautions just as if we were trying to avoid the flu.

As a company we keep all items clean and sanitized from home to home. We are always very careful because we value the health and cleanness of our clients homes and offices. Your home/business and families will remain our top priority as well as the health of our employees with every covid-19 cleaning and disinfecting we do..

How to Vacuum

Dust bunnies sound cute, but they are made up of some icky stuff. Dust bunnies contain the corpses and feces of dust mites, body parts of insects such as cockroaches, beetles, ants and spiders, human and animal hair and skin cells, nicotine and tobacco smoke, bacteria, viruses and fungi. These can cause problems for sensitive individuals. You need to learn how to vacuum those bunnies up effectively and completely!

Regular sweeping, dusting and vacuuming can improve symptoms for those with allergies. They are also important for extending the lives of all types of floors, carpets, and furniture. Daily vacuuming is recommended for keeping floors and carpets in tip-top shape. If you can’t vacuum daily, a complete vacuuming once a week is good, with an additional vacuuming just hitting the high spots. Sweeping and dust mopping are less effective than vacuuming.

Most vacuums come with two tools for vacuuming floors. The floor attachment is for vacuuming bare, hard surface floors and antique or oriental rugs. The power head with a beater bar is for all other rugs and carpets. A powerhead separates the fibers of the carpet as it rotates. This allows the airflow to reach in and pull out dust and dirt. The dirt is loosened and can be sucked up. The higher the pile, the more power you need. Powerheads with beater brushes are excellent for removing pet hair.

Vacuum wood floors with the grain of the wood. On carpets, use slow, deliberate, overlapping strokes in a zig-zag pattern. Do not press down as you run your vacuum. This will impede airflow. Approach the fringes on carpets from the inside of the carpet out. Reduce vacuum suction to avoid damaging the fringes. The vacuum handle usually contains the suction control. Turn off the beater bar if that is an option.

The denser or harder the material you are vacuuming, the stronger the suction of your vacuum cleaner should be. Hard floors require the highest suction. Oriental carpets, with their dense piles and stiff backings, require the second highest suction. The third highest suction setting is required for wall-to-wall carpeting. Heirloom or antique rugs require the gentlest suction. High suction can bury the vacuum tool in the carpeting – like what happens when you vacuum drapes and the cloth is pulled into the vacuum, cutting off the airflow. This same advice goes for vacuuming upholstery – do not use downward pressure on the fabric of upholstery as it will block airflow. Using the wrong suction setting on your floors and upholstery results in a failure to clean your floors thoroughly. It also causes stress on the vacuum motor and belts. Since this can’t happen on hard surface floors, use the highest suction setting and let the suction pull dust from grooves, indents and seams of the floor.

Poorly designed vacuum cleaners will spew and leak dust out of gaskets, joints, and bags. Even vacuum motors create dust when running. The purpose of additional filters around the vacuum motor is to catch this dust. If you detect a strong odor when you turn on your vacuum, it may be time to get a new vacuum. It may mean the dust created by the motor is being recirculated in your vacuum.
